Pub Trade look for legislation
The Vinters’ Federation of Ireland (VFI) marched on the Dail on the 17th of November to call upon the government to acknowledge their concerns facing thousands of pubs throughout Ireland. The smoking ban and drink driving legislation has contributed to pub jobs dropping by 30,000 from over five years and 1500 pubs closing down. The VFI used the protest to highlight the changes they want to see brought in through legislation that will help the pub trade namely, increasing the VAT exemption threshold from €75,000 to €100,000, a reduction in excise, rent rates reductions and for publicans who use seven and nine seater vehicles to transport patrons to be able to offset the VAT/VRT as a business expense.

Culinary Visitor Centre for Meath
A Culinary Visitor Centre is being planned for County Meath. The Meath Partnership is planning the €1m centre where visitors will be able to see demonstrations of food manufacturing and cooking and can buy local produce. Chief executive Michael Ludlow says that the Cente will be a focal point of excellence and will drive culinary and food tourism activity in the County. It is a boost for catering and hospitality jobs in the area also, providing up to 40 full-time jobs and a further 20 part-time roles during peak season.
